So, you'd like to have a web site for your business, but you just don't know where to
start. We hope this will give you a better understanding of what goes into a web site, and
how to get the most out of it.
Domain Name
Do I really "need" a Domain Name for my business? No.
Most people want a domain name for their business, but it isn't a necessity. You could
have a totally functional web site at www.lvs.net/yourbusinessname.
It's not very personalized though and most people would prefer www.yourbusinessname.com.
What is a domain name for anyway? Computers find other
computers and web sites on the internet by IP addresses. For example; the site you are
visiting now is actually 207.230.34.45. If you type this number in the address field of
your browser you will end up here. Of course
www.lvs.net
is much easier to tell people and have them remember than an IP address. That's where the
Domain Name Registrars comes in. These Registrars support a database of IP addresses and the Domain Names
assigned to them. It's basically a "directory" listing for web sites.
Domain Names all have an extension. These are typically .com, .net, and .org. There are
others available with various requirements and costs involved. You may want to consider if
you qualify and/or want to pay the additional costs to get the name you want. Other
extensions include .edu (usually a university), .mil, .cc, .tv, and many for foreign
countries.
Tips for deciding on the right Domain Name.
Shorter names are easier to remember and spell. A misspelled domain name is the same as
the wrong name.

then sell them for great deals of money. 3 letter names generally sell for several
